from the Assistant Principal
As
part of the network of Big Picture schools (http://www.bigpicture.org),
Skyland Community High School offers an innovative curriculum
that utilizes each student’s interests and passions to inspire
a love of learning.
Universally,
we are aware that people are most likely to learn—and remember—information
when it resonates on a personal level and relates to personal
experience. Based on this understanding, Skyland helps students
investigate their interests and find real-world Internships
in the community, in order to pursue these passions.
We
have rigorous standards for our students’ Internship experiences.
In addition to performing daily tasks essential to any Internship
site, each student must propose and complete a challenging project
to meet specific standards-aligned academic requirements, while
also serving a real-world purpose for the Mentor and the Internship
site.
That
means our students are learning in high school to produce work
worthy of professional workplace standards. It means tangible
accomplishments allow our students to build essential life skills
and increase self-confidence. And it means our Internship sites
gain meaningful outcomes, in addition to contributing to the
growth and learning of Denver’s urban kids.
While
our Internship sites serve as the backbone of our academic program
and provide incredible learning opportunities for our students,
we find that our Mentors often learn and grow as much as our
students through these experiences.

How to Get an Internship
In
addition to obtaining Internships, Skyland students learn essential
job-hunting skills through our Internship program. Our entire
staff supports this process for our students, but a student
must take ownership in order to ensure that he or she acquires
an Internship related to a genuine personal interest or passion.
Some
of the skills our students gain include:
-
writing and maintaining resumes;
-
making professional phone calls;
-
professional phone and email messaging;
-
following up with contacts in the community;
-
preparing for interviews;
-
attending interviews;
-
writing professional thank you letters;
-
conducting job shadows;
-
punctuality, reliability and daily workplace expectations;
-
professional interaction skills;
-
creating a project timeline;
-
project completion;
-
accepting and growing from real-world evaluation and feedback.

Mentor a Kid
By
mentoring a Skyland Community High School student, you can share
your own profession and passion—and positively affect a young
life. You can provide a setting for a high school student to
learn and grow in remarkable ways.
While
our Internship sites serve as the backbone of our academic program
and provide incredible learning opportunities for our students,
we find that our Mentors often gain as much as our students
through these experiences.
Our
students generally work at Internship sites on Tuesdays and
Thursdays. Each Internship is carefully set up and led by a
student’s Advisor, in order to support and maximize the experience
for the student and the Mentor.
