Skyland Mission and Vision Statement
The
mission of Skyland Community High School is to create a learning
community dedicated to educating one student at a time. This
starts by giving kids the opportunity to learn in a place where
people know each other well and treat each other with respect.
It continues by designing a personalized learning program for
each student individually, providing real-world opportunities
to connect students to their learning, and expecting them to
find authentic, meaningful ways to show what they have learned.
And it culminates in graduating self-directed learners armed
with the skills and experiences to succeed in college and beyond.
Vision
We
believe that schools should be guided by one clear principle:
that everything they do should be “what’s best for kids.” For
this to happen, schools have to be places where kids of all
kinds are known well, understood and respected. Each student’s
educational program should be developed by those who know him
or her best: parents, teachers and him/herself. This program
should grow out of needs, interests and passions. Its goal should
be to connect him/her to the world and to the world of work.
In
service of this vision, Skyland Community High School will provide
students with:
-
A highly personalized learning experience, characterized
by an individual learning plan, daily advising, internship
mentoring and rigorous academics based on student interests;
-
A guiding partnership among students, parents, teacher-advisors,
mentors, and the community that provides a learning context
appropriate to student interest;
-
Opportunities to participate in real-world learning through
internships related to their interests;
-
A formal learning experience that integrates and bridges
school-based learning and work-based learning;
-
A vibrant, flexible learning environment that provides equal
access to all students by adjusting instruction to address
student learning styles, abilities and interests; and
-
Graduation with a high school diploma and the skills and
experience needed for success in college and working in
the real world.
