Programs
PLATO Math Program:
In addition to working with students to develop mathematical thinking skills (QR) in context of their projects, Denver Big Picture High School provides a comprehensive math program which utilizes Plato, a computer based curriculum which meets students where they are. Beginning with a prescriptive assessment, individual core math programs that focus on skill deficiencies are designed for each student. Students progress through their core math in combination with their assigned course, either algebra I, algebra II, geometry or trigonometry, under the guidance of the instructor and tutors. Plato allows students independent, self-paced learning along with constant assessment.
Science Program:
In addition to working with students to develop empirical thinking skills (ER) in context of their projects, the Denver Big Picture High School provides a comprehensive science curriculum for its students. This science curriculum at Denver Big Picture High School strives to make science meaningful and accessible to each student. Our focus is to help students develop the intellectual tools to help them solve the problems they will face throughout their lives. The coursework involves topics that range from Earth Science, Physical Science, and Biology. The content is introduced from the perspective of actual scientific investigation; we learn how science is conducted rather than simply what is already known. Throughout the year students learn strategies and practice skills needed to succeed on the tests, CSAP and ACT, required to graduate from high school and enter college. Finally, as our students develop their own projects, we offer one on one support as they infuse the scientific method and science topics into their own work.
College Prep Program:
DBPHS students all develop a post-graduation plan that includes the opportunity to continue as a college or university student. We prepare students for post-secondary work by requiring that they take a community college class before graduating. Each student is also required to apply to at least five colleges during senior year. We work together with our students and our families to find scholarships and financial aid to make college possible.
