ONE STUDENT
AT A TIME

A Typical Week at
Denver Big Picture High School

Mondays, Wednesdays & Fridays:

The morning starts with an 80-minute session in advisory, working on an interdisciplinary class curriculum and group or independent projects. Students have four additional 45-minute class periods throughout the day, covering math, science, independent project work time and skill-building opportunities.
Before lunch, all advisories meet in the school commons for a 30-minute Pick Me Up. The weekly schedule for PMU: Mondays-announcements and student-led dialogues; Wednesdays-guest speakers; Fridays-community acknowledgments we call “shout-outs” and other relevant school celebrations.
All students end their day back in advisory for a 45-minute session that includes Silent Sustained Reading and time for one-on-one meetings with their advisor.
Class schedules differ for those students in 9/10th grade (Junior Institute) and those in 11/12th grade (Senior Institute). Students enrolled in Jr. Institute take science and math classes every Monday/Wednesday/Friday. Students enrolled in Sr. Institute take math class every Monday/Wednesday/Friday, but may be taking science classes at other learning institutions or taking a class a the local community college.

Tuesdays, and Thursdays
Students in Junior Institute
On Tuesdays, all Jr. Institute students will attend Advisory, math, and science classes from 8:30-12:00 pm. The school day ends at 1:00 pm on Tuesdays after lunch.
On Thursdays, Jr. Institute students will spend the day engaged in either a group internship/service learning opportunity with your advisory or in a small group community project held at the school. Thursdays may also include workshop time designed to give you professional workplace and job-hunting skills, as well as help you identify your career passions and interests.  By the end of the school year students will have had a variety of experiences in the real world with learning opportunities that are sure to spark your internship passion.

Students in Senior Institute
As an upperclassman, you are expected to jump right in and find a new internship, if you didn’t already line one up last spring.  You spend these Tuesdays and Thursdays working in your internship, learning more about your passion and completing a rigorous project that goes deeply into several subject areas.  You may also be taking a college class on one of these days.
